The widespread adoption of the feudal system tied the social structure to land ownership and obligations between lords and vassals, reinforcing a hierarchical society. Additionally, the Church held immense power during this time, influencing both spiritual and political matters, often becoming a central authority in people's lives. Thus, the absence of high literacy rates among peasants distinctly sets it apart from the other characteristics of medieval Europe.
